Aetna Inc., the biggest United States health insurer, said yesterday that it had completed its acquisition of Prudential Healthcare for about $1 billion, after wrestling with outside objections to the acquisition for more than half a year. The purchase, Aetna's third of a managed health care company since 1996, will add about 5.5 million health insurance customers. The transaction also lets Prudential Healthcare's parent, the Prudential Insurance Company of America, shed a money-losing business as it converts to a stock company from one owned by policyholders.
