It was the first time in weeks that Kisangani's beleaguered residents could walk the streets freely. In Kinshasa, the Zairian capital, a rumor spread that President Mobutu Sese Seko had died. The city, Kisangani, was the centerpiece of the Government's fight against the six-month-old rebellion, and its defeat raised serious questions about whether the regime can survive.
