Newsweek yesterday found itself explaining how it was that a performance artist, Anna Deavere Smith, wound up representing the news weekly on Air Force One. Ms. Smith had been given Newsweek credentials to cover the two major political parties' conventions as a guest writer for the magazine, writing one, primarily impressionistic, piece about each event.

David Hill, the hard-driving president of Fox Sports, has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of Fox Television, the division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation that encompasses Fox's television operations. Yesterday's appointment was not a surprise given the praise that Mr. Hill has won from Mr. Murdoch for creating a Fox Sports division virtually from nothing. Mr. Hill began in December 1993 a few days after Fox outbid CBS and agreed to pay $5.8 billion for the rights to National Football League's National Football Conference games for four years. Since then, Fox added National Hockey League and Major League Baseball games to its roster.

CHATHAM, N.J. In 1952, when I was 14 years old, I had just begun to swim for the Amateur Athletic Union team at the Walter Reed Army Hospital pool in Washington. That year, some of the women made the Olympic team, and one brought me a letter opener from Helsinki, Finland. It has "Suomi" inscribed on the handle; 11 summer Olympiads later, I keep it on my desk.

This editorial protested my dismissal from my post as the New York correspondent for Spanish Television after an uncomfortable interview with Spain's new Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar, a conservative.

When the news first broke about T.W.A. flight 800, I did what any self-respecting American would do: glued myself to the TV. As a cable subscriber, I now had the added inducement of two all-disaster-all-the-time channels to surf between -- CNN and the spanking new MSNBC. Your cable box may not offer MSNBC yet, but surely you've seen the oppressively chic, laptop-laden promos. It's the future, it's the revolution, it's the Internet! Though MSNBC is the merger of network TV news and Microsoft, it was NBC's Brian Williams, not a Micronerd, who loomed on screen to fill air time with scanty information, dropped cues and droning experts. CNN's coverage followed the same old-fashioned TV tradition, except that its stiffly coiffed anchors seemed less human than the affable Mr. Williams. When the story is inexplicable mass death, a TV viewer wants company, not androids. On that irrational basis alone, I inclined toward MSNBC.

The shares of the Fritz Companies lost more than half their value yesterday after the company reported a fourth-quarter loss. Fritz, the nation's largest customs broker, also restated third-quarter earnings. It attributed the problems in part to its dismissal of 200 more workers than expected after last year's $210 million acquisition of the Intertrans Corporation. The company said it would take charges totaling $14.6 million to cover employee severance and the integration of the Intertrans accounts with its own. Fritz's shares fell $15.25, to $12.25, in Nasdaq trading of about 15 million shares.

Caldera Inc. said yesterday that it had filed a lawsuit against the Microsoft Corporation for antitrust violations. Caldera said it was seeking unspecified damages and an injunction stopping what it contends is Microsoft's anticompetitive conduct. The lawsuit echoes complaints filed years ago by the Department of Justice, which charged Microsoft with preventing other companies from selling operating system software to personal computer makers. Microsoft and the Justice Department reached a settlement two years ago.

Capstar Broadcasting Partners agreed yesterday to acquire the Osborn Communications Corporation for about $100 million in cash. Osborn, based in Greenwich, Conn., owns radios stations in the eastern United States. Capstar said the agreement values Osborn stock at $15.375 a share. Osborn's stock closed up $2 a share, at $14, in Nasdaq trading. Under terms of the agreement, Osborn Communications will retain its corporate identity and operate as an autonomous unit. Osborn owns or is acquiring 11 FM and 6 AM radio stations in West Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Ohio. Capstar Broadcasting was formed by Hicks Muse Tate & Furst Inc., a Dallas investment firm, to invest in middle-market radio stations.
