El Daily News, a Spanish Paper, To Begin Publishing Next Week

New York City will get a new newspaper next Wednesday when The Daily News begins publication of El Daily News, a separate Spanish-language publication for distribution at 4,000 outlets in areas of the city with the highest concentration of Hispanic residents. El Daily News, priced at 50 cents and published weekdays, is to have its own staff and carry local and international news, particularly from Latin America; community news, sports and entertainment news, including television listings. Each issue, from 48 to 64 pages, will include a translation in English.

Mourad Hemaizi was coming home from his anchor job on Algerian national television around midnight on Saturday when he was ambushed by killers on a road a few yards from his apartment here. Three terrorists took Mr. Hemaizi to a deserted area, tied him to a pole and shot him three times as his driver watched, newspapers said.

MARSAM PHARMACEUTICALS GETS SEVERAL OFFERS

Marsam Pharmaceuticals Inc. said yesterday that it had received merger offers from several parties for about $19 a share, putting a value on the drug maker of about $210 million. Marsam, based in Cherry Hill, N.J., makes a range of sterile injectable products, including penicillin and morphine sulfate. The company did not identify those making the offers. Marsam's shares gained $2.375 yesterday, to $18.625, in Nasdaq trading.

BEVERLY DELAYS SPINOFF OF INSTITUTIONAL PHARMACY

The shares of Beverly Enterprises Inc. fell 12 percent yesterday after the company said it would delay the spinoff of its institutional pharmacy unit and would report lower-than-expected second-quarter profits. Beverly said the unit, the Pharmacy Corporation of America, was losing customers because of recent acquisitions and changes in pricing for intravenous therapy services. Those problems are expected to cut Beverly's second-quarter earnings by 5 cents to 7 cents a share, the company said. Beverly's shares fell $1.625 yesterday, to $11.375, in New York Stock Exchange trading of almost 2.3 million shares.

PARAMETRIC TO PAY $180 MILLION IN STOCK FOR RASNA

The Parametric Technology Corporation, the nation's largest maker of mechanical design automation software, agreed yesterday to buy the privately held Rasna Corporation for about $180 million worth of stock. Parametric Technology, based in Waltham, Mass., would issue 4,253,491 shares of its common stock for 100 percent ownership of Rasna. Parametric's stock was off 75 cents yesterday, at $42.25, in Nasdaq trading. Rasna, based in San Jose, Calif., develops, markets and supports the Mechanica family of integrated software products for mechanical design.

Darden Shares Begin Trading

Darden Restaurants Inc. began trading today as a public company separate from General Mills Inc. Shares of the company opened at $10.75, 17 percent below expectations, before ending the day up 37.5 cents, at $11.125, on the New York Stock Exchange. The company's stock was expected to go public at $12 to $13 a share, though it began trading on a when-issued basis at $9.75 a share on May 9.

Arista Records President Renews Contract

Clive Davis, the president and founder of Arista Records, who signed stars including Whitney Houston and the Grateful Dead, has renewed his contract with BMG Entertainment until the year 2000, the company said yesterday. Mr. Davis founded Arista in 1974; it was acquired in 1979 by the German media company Bertelsmann A.G. Today Arista is one of the core labels of BMG Entertainment, Bertelsmann's music and entertainment arm.

Dollar Steady as Traders Await Friday's Report on Employment

The dollar was steady against most leading currencies yesterday, supported by expectations that the United States employment report on Friday would show enough strength to dissuade the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates. "Everyone is gearing up for Friday's nonfarm payrolls numbers," said Joe Francomano, a currency dealer at Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank in New York. "If the number is up, hopefully this dollar slide will end. My opinion is that there's no way the Fed will ease rates."

Moody's Raises Rating on G.M.

Moody's Investors Service raised its ratings yesterday on about $70 billion of senior debt of the General Motors Corporation and the debt of some of its affiliates. Moody's also increased G.M.'s rating for commercial paper to Prime-1, its highest rating, from Prime-2, meaning that G.M. will find it less expensive to borrow short term. Commercial paper is a loan that matures in 2 to 270 days.

Soybean prices fell sharply yesterday as forecasts for sunny skies and drier weather eased concern that rain-delayed planting would reduce this year's harvest. Corn and wheat prices also fell. "We're slaves to the weather," said Victor Lespinasse, an analyst with Dean Witter Reynolds in Chicago. "And the weather looks drier."
