Kim Il Sung's death was the most important event on the Korean peninsula in decades, but because North Korea routinely refuse visas to journalists, they must follow the events from countries where broadcasts from North Korea can be monitored. North Korea is one of the most secretive countries. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, a small number of journalists from other Communist countries visited Pyongyang, the capital. But Western journalists have generally had access only on special occasions.

Somali Kidnapping: Should Press Be Mum?

News organizations all over the world agreed not to report the kidnapping of a reporter for The Associated Press in Somalia during a 20-day captivity that ended on Friday. The kidnapping -- and the information that news organizations did not report it -- was first disclosed publicly in an Associated Press dispatch printed by many newspapers on Saturday. The reporter, Tina Susman, was released in good health on Friday.

The three big broadcast networks had few second thoughts last week about clearing out almost all of their daytime schedules to cover the preliminary hearing in the O. J. Simpson murder case. Their decisions were relatively easy for two main reasons: the courtroom coverage wasn't costing them all that much, and there was just too much interest in the story to allow viewers to slip away somewhere else, like CNN.

Poll of Teen-Agers: Battle of the Sexes On Roles in Family

A nationwide poll of teen-agers found that boys are substantially more traditional than girls in their expectations of the family life they will have as adults. The girls surveyed were more likely than the boys to say that they could have a happy life even if they did not marry and that they would consider becoming a single parent. And 86 percent of the girls said they expected to work outside the home while married, while only 7 percent said they did not.

Unisys in Link With Micron

The Unisys Corporation and Micron Technology Inc. said today that they were teaming up to develop products and services based on radio frequency identification technology. The products have potential applications in remote inventory tracking, personnel identification, commodity monitoring and toll collection for highways and rapid transit systems, the companies said in a statement.

DIGITAL TO ENTER VENTURE WITH GENERAL INSTRUMENT

The Digital Equipment Corporation and the General Instrument Corporation said yesterday that they had agreed to work together to create systems to provide television viewers with access to an array of information, including movies and home-shopping services. Digital Equipment, based in Maynard, Mass., will provide the server, or large computer, and the software for the system. General Instrument, one of the largest makers of equipment for cable television systems, will provide the set-top boxes that sit on television sets to allow access. General Instrument, based in Chicago, controls about 65 percent of the growing market for set-top boxes, a Digital spokeswoman said.

P.& G. TO DEVELOP LUXURY PERFUME WITH FERRAGAMO

The Procter & Gamble Company said yesterday that it would jointly develop a luxury perfume with Salvatore Ferragamo Firenze S.p.A., an Italian maker of shoes, leather goods and leather and silk accessories. As part of the deal, P.& G. will have exclusive rights to sell the perfumes under the Salvatore Ferragamo name. The first perfume will be a women's luxury fragrance. P.& G., based in Cincinnati, has been looking for a luxury brand to add to its perfume line, analysts said. In 1991, P.& G. acquired Max Factor, which makes Laura Biagiotti perfume, and Hugo Boss cologne.

BORDEN SELLS BAMA FOODS UNIT TO WELCH

Borden Inc. sold its Bama Foods unit to Welch Foods Inc., continuing a $1.2 billion revamping effort. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. Bama Foods, a maker of jams, jellies, mayonnaise and peanut butter based in Birmingham, Ala., has annual sales of about $70 million, Borden said. Borden, based in Columbus, Ohio, had total sales of about $5.51 billion last year. The goal of Borden's revamping, which includes the sale of units with annual sales totaling about $1.2 billion, is to focus on the company's core brands, which include a wide range of products from Classico pasta sauces to Cracker Jack candy to Elmer's glue. Borden has already sold its food service, seafood, Bennett's sauces and Japanese ice cream businesses.

ALLIED HOLDINGS TO BUY CANADIAN VEHICLE CARRIER

The stock of Allied Holdings Inc. rose 14 percent yesterday after the company agreed to acquire Auto-Trans Holdings Ltd. for an undisclosed amount. Auto-Trans, with $130 million in revenues in 1993, is the largest transporter of motor vehicles in Canada. The combined companies would have almost $400 million in annual revenues. Allied Holdings, based in Atlanta, transports new vehicles from auto assembly plants, ports and rail ramps to automobile dealers in the United States. The company operates 31 terminals and about 1,500 tractor-trailers. Allied Holdings' stock climbed $2.125, to $17.625, in Nasdaq trading.

CONTINENTAL RESERVATION UNIT TO GET AT&T EQUIPMENT

System One, the reservation network owned by Continental Airlines Inc., said yesterday that it had signed a $150 million agreement to buy computer equipment from the AT&T Corporation. The five-year deal will provide System One with a broad range of AT&T's System 3000 products, from large mainframe to notebook computers. AT&T will also offer maintenance for the products. System One, based in Houston, provides reservation information on more than 600 airlines, 26,000 hotels and 36 rental car companies. The new technology will enable the computer network to offer travel agents more information at a faster rate.
