Carrier Raises No-Frill Flights

Continental Airlines said today that it would raise by one-third the number of flights on which it offered unrestricted low fares; expand its no-frill short-haul service, and hire 400 more pilots. The carrier will increase to 1,167 from 875 the number of flights on which some seats carry the unrestricted "Peanuts Fares" designation and will add 96 daily departures to its schedule, bringing the systemwide total to 2,317.

F.T.D. CONSIDERING SEVERAL UNSOLICITED OFFERS

The Florists' Transworld Delivery Association, better known as F.T.D., said that it had received several unsolicited offers to buy its business and that it had appointed a board committee to plot its future. The association retained W. Y. Campbell & Company, an investment banker in Detroit, to advise it on the offers and on other alternatives. F.T.D., based in Southfield, Mich., is owned by more than 23,000 independent retail florists in the United States and Canada who exchange orders for out-of-town delivery of flowers. In its 1992-1993 fiscal year, F.T.D. filled orders worth about $640 million in sales.

WEITEK STOCK PLUMMETS ON PROJECTION OF BIG LOSS

Shares of the Weitek Corporation fell 41 percent yesterday after the chip maker said it would report a significant second-quarter loss because it had lost a major order. The company, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., also said it would take a one-time charge of $2 million to $3 million to write off inventory in the quarter that ends July 2. The stock of Weitek tumbled $2.625, to $3.75, in Nasdaq trading. Less than a year ago, it traded at $14.375. Weitek makes chips that speed graphics performance in I.B.M.-compatible personal computers that use the Windows operating system. The company declined to disclose which major customer chose to switch suppliers.

HEINZ ACQUIRES BORDEN'S FOOD-SERVICE BUSINESS

Completing a deal that was widely reported last month, but not officially announced, the H. J. Heinz Company said yesterday that it had acquired the food-service business of Borden Inc. for an undisclosed amount. The Borden unit, which had 1993 sales of $225 million, sells single-serving packages of foods like sauces and condiments, and also sells bulk amounts of oil-based products like mayonnaise. The acquisition will help strengthen Heinz's presence in the single-serving food-service market, which is growing about 5 percent a year, the company said. On the New York Stock Exchange, shares of Heinz rose 25 cents, to $33, and Borden's shares gained 62.5 cents, to $13.125.

Air Products Adds Charge for Swap Losses

The Platinum Software Corporation said it would cut 300 jobs, or 37 percent of its work force, and sell its noncore software lines and foreign sales distribution network, resulting in a $15 million charge in the quarter that ends June 30. The moves will pare operations to two business divisions selling Platinum and Sequel to Platinum software, the company's key financial software products. The software assists executives in managing corporate finances. The company's stock rose 25 cents, to $5.875, in Nasdaq trading.

THREE COMPANIES JOIN TO DEVELOP TV SET-TOP BOXES

The Philips Consumer Electronics Company, the Zenith Electronics Corporation and Compression Labs Inc. said yesterday that they would jointly design and build advanced television set-top boxes. The companies will pool their technologies to manufacture both digital boxes and combined digital and analog, or hybrid, boxes. These devices enable telecommunications and cable companies to deliver video on demand, video games, home shopping and other interactive services to homes. Products from the alliance will be shipped by the end of the year, a Zenith spokesman said. Philips and Zenith are two of the largest color television set makers in North America. Compression Labs supplies real-time digital video encoding and decoding systems.

J. P. MORGAN TO SELL 6 MILLION SHARES OF COLUMBIA/HCA

The J. P. Morgan Capital Corporation will sell six million shares, or 28 percent of its stake, of the Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation in a secondary public offering, the hospital chain said yesterday. J. P. Morgan Capital, an affiliate of J. P. Morgan & Company, currently holds 21.1 million shares, or 6.24 percent, of the company, which is based in Louisville, Ky. The company acquired the shares when the HCA Hospital Corporation of America, a predecessor of Columbia/HCA, went private in a leveraged buyout in 1989. The shares to be sold, which do not currently have voting rights, will be converted into voting shares before the sale, Columbia/HCA said. The company's stock fell $1.50, to $36.50, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Power Plants in China

The Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation has received contracts valued at $18 million for two coal-fired steam generators in the Hubei province of China. The contracts, part of the Ezhou power project, will represent Foster Wheeler's second and third power plants in China. The plnats will be built for the China National Technical Import and Export Corporation and the Hubei Provincial Electric Power Industry Bureau. Foster Wheeler provides engineering, construction and design services in addition to plant managment and environmental services.

India Shifting Phone Policy

India said last week that it planned to permit private companies registered in the nation to operate basic telephone services. "In a major shift of policy, companies registered in India will now be allowed to participate in the expansion of the telecommunications network in the area of basic telephone services also," an official statement said on Friday.
