Just three months ago, when two networks were offering air time by the truckload to Diane Sawyer, the news magazine was considered television's hottest programming genre. But by last week, when the official network season ended, the ratings for the nine news magazines now on the air were down not only for the entire season, but sharply in the second half. The decline is raising concern that the news magazine format may have reached a saturation point with viewers.

IN just six months, Torrington's once mild-mannered daily paper has gone from covering the news to making it, angering readers, devastating longtime employees and providing a field day for the local and national press.
When the Journal Register Company of Trenton, N.J., bought the paper, The Register Citizen, in October, it immediately cut about 20 jobs from a total of around 130, made employees contribute more to health insurance payments, refused to honor contracts with composing room and press room employees and cut some workers' pay.

The study, prepared for the Regional Plan Association by the economic consulting firm DRI/McGraw-Hill, offers one of the most detailed looks in recent years at the economy of the immense urban conglomeration of New York City and its surrounding area. Roche Holdings Inc. invested $95.4 million this week in Genentech Inc., lifting its stake in the biotechnology company to 63.9 percent from 62.1 percent. Roche, part of Roche Holdings Ltd. of Switzerland, bought 2.06 million redeemable shares of Genentech, based in South San Francisco, Calif., on the New York Stock Exchange. The average price was $46.25 a share, according to two Securities and Exchange Commission documents filed on Thursday and Friday.

Barnett Banks Inc. has sued four of its former public finance specialists, accusing them of stealing corporate documents and breaching fiduciary duties when they went to work for a unit of the First Union Corporation. The suit, filed on Thursday in Florida state court in Jacksonville, seeks damages exceeding $15,000 from the former employees of Barnett Securities Inc. The four -- Eugene Cahalan, Philip Roberts, Mark Galvin and David Kasdin -- had no immediate comment.
