Patricia Harper, who was among the first women to become a television news anchor, died yesterday in her home in Spain. She was 59. The cause was a heart attack, said Karen Scott, an executive producer at WPIX-TV in New York City and a longtime friend of Ms. Harper.

China's official news agency said tonight that Wei Jingsheng, the best-known figure in the campaign for democracy in China, was released after being briefly detained on Friday, but Mr. Wei's office continued to report him missing. In a separate development today, editors of the Ming Pao newspaper, based in Hong Kong, arrived in Beijing seeking confirmation of a report that one of its reporters, Xi Yang, has been sentenced to 12 years in a Chinese prison on charges relating to his news-gathering activities in Beijing last summer.

Several weeks after the lawyers William M. Kunstler and Ronald L. Kuby brought their high-profile approach to the defense of Colin Ferguson, who is accused of killing six people aboard a commuter train, the Nassau County District Attorney has requested a gag order for all lawyers involved in the case. In a memorandum to the court, the District Attorney, Denis Dillon, said Mr. Kunstler and Mr. Kuby have "fueled the media's interest" in the case and "sought to influence public opinion by publicizing 'their side of the story.' "

Hollinger Inc.'s American subsidiary has completed its $180 million purchase of The Chicago Sun-Times. The Sun-Times is the ninth-largest daily-circulation metropolitan newspaper in the United States. The acquisition was announced Feb. 28. Hollinger, based in Toronto, publishes newspapers and magazines in Canada, Britain, the United States, Australia and Israel.

Citicorp completed the sale of its Quotron Systems Inc. unit yesterday to Reuters Holdings P.L.C. for $12.8 million, ending a long quest to shed the money-losing business. The terms of the deal, which was disclosed in January, show how far Citicorp went to get the data services unit off its hands. Citicorp will pay Reuters $80 million to meet Quotron operating losses over a two-year period. Citicorp will also cover unspecified rationalization costs of the transaction over a 26-month period.

Hughes Electronics is combining three aerospace and electronics operations into an entity called the Hughes Aerospace and Electronics Company. The merged company, to have headquarters in Washington and Los Angeles, is intended to make it easier for the Federal Government to work with the company by focusing contracting efforts on one operation. Hughes, a unit of the General Motors Corporation, will combine the three operations that did the bulk of the company's Government contracting: aerospace and military, missile systems and computer systems integration. Richard Dore, a company spokesman, said there would be job cuts, though he declined to be specific. "Undoubtedly when you have this type of restructuring element, there are going to be cuts," he said. The combined units employ about 36,000 workers, or three-quarters of the 50,000 employees at Los Angeles-based Hughes Aircraft. Together, Hughes Aircraft and Delco Electronics make up General Motors' Hughes Electronics unit, which employs a total of 80,000 workers.

A small Utah company is seeking help from an unlikely patron: Paul A. Bilzerian, the former corporate raider. Mr. Bilzerian has been hired as a management consultant by Cimetrix Inc., an Orem, Utah, company that says it has software marketing contracts with I.B.M. and Hewlett-Packard. Under his contract, Mr. Bilzerian received an option to buy 20 percent of Cimetrix stock for $1 million. He also received the right to vote an additional 50.4 percent of the shares for three years on some issues, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

Hawaiian Air's efforts to emerge from bankruptcy protection were delayed after a Federal judge postponed ruling on a key step after hearing objections by creditors. A bankruptcy judge in Honolulu put off for at least a week a hearing on the outline of a reorgnization plan from HAL Inc., the airline's parent company. BHA Aviation Inc., a New York investment firm, objected to the company's disclosure statement because it did not mention BHA's $21 million bid. The State of Hawaii and other smaller creditors also raised objections. But Bruce Nobles, HAL president and chief operating officer, said: "This does not indicate any problems from an operating or financial standpoint. It's just administrative." HAL hoped to get out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, and the delay will push back its plans to June, Mr. Nobles said. Under the terms of a marketing agreement with the AMR Corporation, the parent of American Airlines, HAL must be out of bankruptcy proceedings by May. "American has agreed to a one-week continuance, and we believe they will agree to an additional continuance," Mr. Nobles said.

The First Empire State Corporation of Buffalo said yesterday that it had signed an agreement to acquire Ithaca Bancorp Inc. for $46.4 million in cash. Under the agreement, First Empire will pay $19 for each of Ithaca Bancorp's 2.44 million shares outstanding. The market was closed yesterday. Ithaca Bancorp has assets of $447 million. It operates through 12 banking offices in Tompkins, Cortland and Broome Counties. First Empire, with assets of $10.4 billion, is the holding company for the East New York Savings Bank in New York City and the Manufacturers and Traders Trust Company of Buffalo.
