The Wall Street Journal said yesterday that it would begin additional regional coverage for its Southeast and Florida editions every Wednesday, beginning on Oct. 12. The Journal said its Marketplace section for the Florida and Southeast editions would get an additiional four pages devoted to coverage of issues important in those regions. The Southeast Journal will appear in about 122,000 copies of the newspaper that circulate in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and parts of Tennessee.

Times Reaches Tentative Accord With Guild

The New York Times reached a tentative contract agreement yesterday with its biggest union, the Newspaper Guild of New York. If ratified by the guild, the contract would leave The Times with contracts through the year 2000 with all of its 12 unions.

Zulu Nationalist Leader Appears to Yield on Election

South African negotiators said today that they were near a breakthrough that could avert a violent election boycott, after Chief Mangosuthu G. Buthelezi, the Zulu nationalist leader, made a last-minute appeal to be included in elections next week. Chief Buthelezi met for much of the day with President F. W. de Klerk and senior officials of the African National Congress, reportedly seeking a way his Inkatha Freedom Party could be added to the ballot for the vote that begins in eight days.

CHAIRMAN OF U.S. BANCORP STEPS DOWN

The chairman of U.S. Bancorp, Roger L. Breezley, resigned yesterday. He will be succeeded by Gerry B. Cameron, the chief executive. The company, based in Portland, Ore., also said it planned to buy back up to six million shares to finance the company's 1993 stock incentive plan and for other corporate purposes. The company has about 99.7 million shares outstanding. Mr. Breezley, 56, will remain on the board. He relinquished the chief executive's post in January, the company said.

ENTERRA TO ACQUIRE TOTAL ENERGY SERVICES

The Enterra Corporation said yesterday that it would acquire the Total Energy Services Company for about $246.2 million in stock and cash and the assumption of $68 million in Total Energy debt. Enterra said it would swap 11.3 million common shares for Total Energy. At yesterday's closing price of $19.75 for Enterra's shares, the stock portion of the transaction would be $223.2 million. In addition, Enterra will pay $23 million cash for minority interests in two Total Energy subsidiaries. Private funds managed by the First Reserve Corporation of Greenwich, Conn., currently own about 99 percent of Total Energy and will own about 41 percent of Enterra's common stock after the deal.

NEC SAID TO BE CLOSE TO INVESTMENT IN GENERAL MAGIC

The NEC Corporation, which dominates Japan's market for personal computers, will invest an undisclosed amount in the multimedia consortium General Magic to gain access to the United States company's communications software, Nikkei English News reported yesterday. A NEC official denied that the company had made any formal decision to invest in General Magic, but he would not rule out the possibility that NEC might do so in the future. A General Magic spokeswoman also declined to confirm the report. NEC's participation would bring to 11 the number of high-technology giants that have joined the privately held General Magic, based in Mountain View, Calif.

SHARES SURGE FOR COMPANY IN HARTFORD SCHOOLS TALKS

Shares of Education Alternatives Inc. rose 20 percent yesterday on news that the company is in talks to run the public school system of Hartford. Its stock rose rose $2.50, to $14.50, in Nasdaq trading. The stock has traded as high as $48.50 and as low as $10.0625 within the last six months. Education Alternatives, based in Minneapolis, was founded three years ago and manages a school in Dade Country, Fla., and 12 in Baltimore. If Education Alternatives wins a contract to manage the Hartford schools, it could charge management fees of 3 to 5 percent of the district's annual budget of about $214 million a year. That would mean roughly $6 million to $10.7 million in revenues for Education Alternatives, which had revenues of $14.1 million in the second half of 1993.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS TO EXPAND PRODUCTION IN SCOTLAND

The Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation said yesterday that it would build a new line of work stations in Linlithgow, Scotland, and expand operations there. The Mountain View, Calif., company said the Scottish plant would be the sole manufacturer of its new Sparcstation Voyager line of nomadic work stations, which are designed for users at temporary work sites who need access to their corporate network. Sun, the leader in work stations, is one of 450 foreign technology companies that have plants in Scotland's Silicon Glen, a 70-mile-wide stretch between Glasgow and Edinburgh where about 10 percent of the world's personal computers are built.

BELLSOUTH TO SPEND $3 BILLION ON SOUTHERN NETWORK

The BellSouth Corporation plans to spend nearly $3 billion on maintaining and improving its network in nine Southern states this year. The planned expenditures will be in addition to the almost $30 billion the company has spent since it was spun off from A.T.& T. in 1984. BellSouth, based in Atlanta, said its BellSouth Telecommunications unit was spending heavily on digital electronic switching equipment.

GTE PLANS TO INTRODUCE A POCKET-PHONE SERVICE

The GTE Corporation said yesterday that it would introduce an inexpensive new pocket-phone service later this year. The new service, to be called Tele-Go, will use lightweight portable phones that can transmit calls on GTE's cellular telephone network as well as the traditional wired phone system. GTE, which is based in Stamford, Conn., has been testing Tele-Go in the Tampa, Fla., market with 3,000 subscribers for more than a year, a spokesman said.
