CNN Charged Over Tapes Of Noriega

The Cable News Network was charged with contempt of court today on the recommendation of a special Federal prosecutor, who said the network had "knowingly and willfully" disobeyed a judge's order in 1990 not to broadcast tape recordings of Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega while the former Panamanian dictator was in jail here. The criminal complaint was announced nearly three and a half years after Judge William M. Hoeveler first learned that CNN had obtained tape recordings of General Noriega's telephone conversations. The calls involved his lawyers and members of their staffs, former military subordinates, his family and his mistress and her family. The network eventually surrendered the tapes, but only after broadcasting excerpts for two days and fighting all the way to the Supreme Court.

MOBIL BUYS STAKE IN VIETNAM OILFIELD

The Mobil Corporation said yesterday that it had acquired a 25 percent stake in an oilfield off the coast of Vietnam, where it will explore for oil. Mobil, the second-largest oil company in the United States, said it had bought the stake from AOC Energy Development Ltd. of Japan, which retains a 30 percent stake in the block. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS REPORTS HIGHER REVENUES

Sun Microsystems Inc., which is based in Mountain View, Calif., and is the largest maker of computer work stations, said yesterday that its revenues had increased by 5 percent for the third quarter, to as much as $1.2 billion. But the estimate was below some analysts' forecasts. Stephen Dube of Wasserstein, Perella & Company had expected Sun to report revenues of nearly $1.3 billion. He attributed the shortfall to the company's latest product announcements, including a work station introduced on Tuesday. Customers had deferred ordering computers until the new models were available, he said.

SOFTWARE MAKER PLANS ANOTHER REVAMPING

Borland International Inc., hurt by changes in the software industry and its own mistakes, is restructuring for the third time in six years. Borland, a computer software maker based in Scotts Valley, Calif., said yesterday that it was cutting 200 jobs, about 14 percent of its United States work force, and closing most of its regional sales offices in the United States. Borland said it also expected to reduce the staff at its European operations. The reductions will cut expenses by about $50 million a year, or 13 percent of the company's operating expenses of $385.1 million. The company said it would also take a charge against earnings for its fourth quarter, which ended yesterday, but would not know the amount for at least two weeks.

BIG AIRLINES EXTENDING SPRING FARE SALES

Big domestic airlines extended their spring air-fare sales yesterday after America West Airlines offered savings as large as one-third off published fares for travel through July 31. The discounts were matched by United, American, Northwest, Continental, T.W.A. and Delta Air Lines on routes where they compete with America West. The deadline for buying tickets under an existing sale was to expire at midnight.

CAMBRIDGE BIOTECH STOCK FALLS ON ACCOUNTING MOVE

Shares of the Cambridge Biotech Corporation tumbled 51 percent yesterday after the company said Deloitte & Touche had resigned as the company's outside auditor and withdrawn its opinion on the company's 1992 results. Cambridge Biotech's stock fell $1.4375, to $1.375, in Nasdaq trading. The company, a developer of vaccines and therapeutic products, said yesterday that the accounting firm had suspended work on its 1993 results because of "concerns about certain transactions and their possible impact on the company's financial results."

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY FOR CELLULAR ONE IN NEW YORK

The Cellular One unit of McCaw Cellular Communications has put into effect digital technology that triples the capacity of its cellular telephone system in the New York metropolitan area. The new equipment will also enable services like paging and electronic mail. Cellular One is using time-division multiple-access technology, which allows cellular operators to transmit three times as much data onto a given radio channel as conventional analog signals.

SPANISH BANK RAISES STAKE IN FIRST FIDELITY TO 22.7%

Banco Santander S.A. of Spain has raised its stake in First Fidelity Bancorporation to 22.7 percent, from 20.1 percent, according to a filing yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The bank acquired 2.37 million shares of First Fidelity on March 29 by exercising warrants to buy stock at $25.50 a share, according to the filing. Banco Santander paid a total of $60.5 million in cash for the shares in First Fidelity, a bank holding company based in Lawrenceville, N.J., that has $33.8 billion in assets. In 1991, Banco Santander acquired 9.5 million shares and warrants to purchase an additional 9.5 million shares from First Fidelity.

INTEL AND PACIFIC BELL SIGN VIDEO CONFERENCING PACT

The Intel Corporation and Pacific Bell signed an agreement yesterday on computer-based video conferencing in California. Under the agreement, Intel's Proshare Video System 200 products will be available from resellers for $999 when an integrated services digital network, or I.S.D.N., line is ordered from Pacific Bell, the companies said. An I.S.D.N. line enables the transmission of data, facsimile, and video signals across a network. The Proshare Video System 200 uses a tiny camera and add-on cards to enable personal computers based on Intel's 486 or Pentium chips to exchange live video. Pacific Bell said more than 60 percent of its telephone lines in California have access to I.S.D.N. technology.
