LEAD: The Ford Motor Company said it would idle its Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar assembly system at its Lorain, Ohio, assembly plant for one week because of a shortage of interior trim materials. The shutdown is effective today. The Thunderbird-Cougar assembly system employs 2,700 hourly employees on two shifts and builds about 5,600 units weekly, Ford said.

Brennan, had been given an ultimatum by its board of directors last week to shape up the company's sagging retail operations or leave. Crain's Chicago Business reported today that Mr. Brennan had been told at a directors meeting last Wednesday that he had six months to achieve marked improvement in retail profits.
