PIVOTAL FIGURE IN THE BEIRUT CRISIS: NABIH BERRI

Date: 18 June 1985

By Elaine Sciolino

Elaine Sciolino

His sudden propulsion into the vortex of the hijacking drama has confirmed what Beirut watchers have known all along - that Nabih Berri, a soft-spoken, mild-mannered, 46-year-old lawyer is perhaps the most powerful man in Lebanon. His leadership of the mainstream of the Shiite movement gives him political power that outstrips that of the Christian President, Amin Gemayel. As head of the Amal militia, he has battlefield strength to contend with the Palestinians or the Druse fighters of Walid Jumblat. Mr. Berri, who retains a green card entitling him to work in the United States and whose first wife and six children live in Dearborn, Mich., long plotted a steady, moderate course. It was not until Israel invaded Lebanon in the summer of 1982 that he came into his own as a political force.

SAUDI PRINCE ON SPACE VOYAGE: SULTAN SALMAN AL-SAUD

Date: 19 June 1985

By John Noble Wilford

John Wilford

A nephew of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, Prince Sultan Salman al-Saud is not only the first Arab to fly in space, but also the first member of royalty. From his vantage point aboard Discovery, 220 miles above the earth, he hoped to be the first Moslem to see the sliver new moon yesterday, marking the end of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Moslem year. But the 28-year-old prince was in the shuttle crew for neither royal nor religious reasons. He was there to observe and photograph the launching of an Arab communication satellite.

AS BEIRUT DRAMA UNFOLDS, REPORTERS SCRAMBLE TO FILL THE GAPS

Date: 18 June 1985

By Alex S. Jones

By about 4:30 A.M. last Friday, when word reached the Washington headquarters of United Press International that a Trans World Airlines jetliner had been hijacked, the bureau had already been racked with worry for several hours. Hours before, a British correspondent for U.P.I. in Beirut had been pulled from a car and kidnapped by unknown assailants. About 5:30, the correspondent, whom U.P.I. has not identified for fear of reprisal, arrived at the news agency's offices after having been driven around Beirut for hours in the trunks of several cars, questioned and then, inexplicably, set free. Though he was encouraged to leave the country immediately, he refused and went to work covering the hijacking, according to Sylvana Foa, the news agency's foreign editor.

HBO FILM CALLED UNFAIR TO FORMER CBS OFFICIAL

Date: 18 June 1985

By Sally Bedell Smith

A Home Box Office docudrama about the broadcasting career of Edward R. Murrow, a CBS News correspondent from the 1930's to the 60's, has drawn criticism from current and former officials of CBS News about the portrayal of Dr. Frank Stanton, CBS's former president. Two of the officials - Don Hewitt, executive producer of the CBS weekly magazine ''60 Minutes,'' and Richard Salant, former president of CBS News - said they had notified the film's producers, Herbert Brodkin and Robert Berger, that the portrayal of Dr. Stanton was inaccurate and unfair. The film, which mixes the fictional with the factual, shows Dr. Stanton in several scenes advocating higher profits over news programming. ''Murrow'' stars Daniel J. Travanti as Mr. Murrow, who died in 1965; Dabney Coleman as William S. Paley, the founder and former chairman of CBS; Edward Herrmann as Fred Friendly, the producer of Mr. Murrow's programs, and John McMartin as Dr. Stanton. The $5 million film, being shot in London, is scheduled to be broadcast next January.

Many Questions, One President

Date: 18 June 1985

By Marjorie Hunter, Special To the New York Times

Marjorie Hunter

There are times when even a President of the United States has a hard time getting a word in edgewise. At President Reagan's regularly scheduled news conferences, reporters are allowed to ask a question only when the President recognizes them by name or points to them in the audience. At other times, such as when Mr. Reagan crosses the South Lawn to board or debark from his helicopter, it is every reporter on his or her own. Often, the shouted questions cancel out each other and the President either looks puzzled if he wants to answer or moves purposefully on if he does not want to answer, smiling and waving for the cameras but ignoring the microphones.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1985 International The hostages' unconditional release was called for President Reagan. He vowed that the United States would never give in to terrorists. In a nationally televised news conference, he said ''American will never make concessions to terrorists. To do so would only invite more terrorism.'' He urged an extension of the American ''armed sky marshal program'' to international flights of domestic airlines. [Page 1, Column. 6.] Three more hostages were freed in Beirut by the hijackers of the Trans World Airlines jet. Two Americans and a Greek were released. NEWS SUMMARY

Date: 18 June 1985

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 1985 International More than 30 hostages were taken off the hijacked T.W.A. jetliner in Beirut, according to one report. But the prospects for their freedom and the 10 others taken off the plane earlier were uncertain. Nabih Berri, the Shiite Moslem leader, whose militia has assumed a major role in the hijacking, said he had ordered the passengers to be taken off for what he called security reasons. He said the hostages were being held ''somewhere in Beirut.'' [Page A1, Column 6.] The key to the hostages' fate is held by Nabih Berri, the Reagan Administration told him. It insisted that the United States would make no concessions to the gunmen who took the Americans prisoners when they hijacked the T.W.A. jetliner Friday, and that it would not ask Israel to release Shiite prisoners to meet the hijackers' demands. PRESIDENT'S NEWS CONFERENCE ON FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC ISSUES

Date: 19 June 1985

Following is a transcript of President Reagan's news conference last night in Washington, as recorded by the New York Times: OPENING STATEMENT Please be seated. I have a statement. One hour ago, the body of a young American hero, Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem was returned to his native soil in a coffin after being beaten and shot at point-blank range. His murder and the fate of the other American hostages still being held in Beirut underscore an inescapable fact: the United States is tonight a nation being attacked by international terrorists who wantonly kill and who seize our innocent citizens as their prisoners. In response to this situation, I am directing that the following steps be taken: I have directed the Secretary of Transportation, in cooperation with the Secretary of State, to explore immediately an expansion of our armed sky marshal program aboard international flights of U.S. air carriers for better protection of passengers.
