William E. Sauro Square-Rigger Returns to South Street Seaport After a $500,000 Renovation From the deck of the sailing vessel Peking, spectators watched yesterday as the Wavertree returned to her berth at the museum. The 96-year-old iron-hulled vessel had been undergoing restoration since May at a shipyard in Hoboken, N.J., including the installation of a new 28-foot bowsprit. The three-masted ship was purchased in 1968 for $70,000 in Argentina, where she was being used as a sand barge. Her repair costs so far have totaled $1.5 million.
