INTERNATIONAL 3-22 General Speaks on Iraqi Abuse An Army Reserve general whose soldiers were photographed as they abused Iraqi prisoners said she knew nothing about the abuse until weeks after it occurred. She also said the cellblock at Abu Ghraib prison, west of Baghdad, where the abuse occurred, was under the tight control of Army military intelligence officers who may have encouraged the abuse. Her suggestion appears largely supported in a still-classified Army report on prison conditions in Iraq. 1

A pregnant Israeli woman and her four young daughters were killed by two Palestinian gunmen, who were later shot dead by Israeli soldiers. Israel struck back with a pair of air assaults. A1 American Hostage Escapes Thomas Hamill, an American contractor taken hostage by militants last month, escaped and ran to a group of passing American troops.
